The apply button here does not do what you'd think - it applies the
selected style to the selected text. There is no need to click it.

Wouldn't hurt here to do a "Select All" then choose the "Normal" style.
(Actually the "Apply" above essentially does this, but I'm not sure if
there's a difference.)
At this point, save the new normal.awt over the old one. Close AbiWord
(possibly not necessary, but it won't hurt)
Start AbiWord again, and your changes should take effect.
