It may be possible to do what you want, though it's really doing it the
hard way... I recommend you do it sanely like:
# ./configure --enable-debug --prefix=/opt/abi-test
# make install
or --prefix=$HOME/abi-test if you prefer. If you need to run gdb, then one
way to do it is:
# export ABISUITE_HOME=/opt/abi-test/share/AbiSuite
# export ABISUITE_FONT_HOME=$ABISUITE_HOME/fonts
# gdb /opt/abi-test/bin/AbiWord_d
