Andrew,

This does not answer your question and is somewhat off-topic, but more
of an observation and suggestion.

There are also plain text files which:
 
1. have a linebreak at the end of each line, but then skip a line after
a paragraph, which means that they end a paragraph with two linebreaks

2. start a paragraph with an indent (tab? or x spaces?) and then do not
have a blank line between paragraphs (and each line may or may not end
with a linebreak)

It would be nice if the text importer had options to handle these other
cases, or at least the first. (The second is quite rare today (AFAICT).
